About Dr. C. Everett Koop

Dr. Koop was the Surgeon General of the United States from 1982 to 1989, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. With more than 200 published books and articles, he is widely regarded as the most influential public-health figure of the last half century. Historically, no other Surgeon General has had as great an impact on the field of public health.

  • America's antismoking crusader. He established that nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine and identified the dangers of secondhand smoke. Smoking rates fell from 38% to 27% during his tenure — the largest single-decade decline on record — leading directly to today's smoke-free workplaces and public spaces.
  • Led the nation through the AIDS crisis. He wrote the first government report identifying the sexual transmission of AIDS, and in 1988 mailed a science-based AIDS brochure to every U.S. household — 107 million copies — keeping the national response grounded in medicine over politics.
  • Pioneer of pediatric surgery. Before entering public life he served as Surgeon-in-Chief at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for 35 years, established the nation's first newborn surgical intensive care unit, and led the surgical separation of conjoined twins.
  • Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest civilian honor in the United States — as well as the French Legion of Honor and more than 35 honorary doctorates.

Dr. Koop passed away on February 25, 2013, at the age of 96. His legacy continues through the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth, which he founded in 1992. Wikipedia's article on Dr. Koop specifically notes that "Koop continued to endorse Life Alert bracelets for the elderly" — a reflection of his lifelong commitment to senior safety and independent living.
